U.S. News Calculates Campus Ethnic Diversity

In her most recent position as president and chief executive officer of Pacific Union College (PUC), Dr. Heather Knight helped increase enrollment by 300 students in just four years. The first black woman to lead a North American Adventist college as president, Dr. Heather Knight focused on improving diversity at the school. In 2016, U.S. News and World Report named PUC Most Diverse National Liberal Arts College in the Country.

College rankings by U.S. News and World Report provide valuable information for high school students selecting a college or university. The Campus Ethnic Diversity ranking helps students identify schools where they are most like to encounter someone from an ethnic background different from their own. The rankings utilize enrollment data from each fall’s undergraduate student body, excluding international students, and calculate the total proportion of non-white students.

The formula gives each school a score between zero and one, with more diverse schools scoring closer to one. For the purposes of calculations, any student who chooses not to disclose his or her race is counted as white.
